Abstract

The spatial distribution of the scheduled caste population of India is described using data primarily from the 1981 census. This population accounts for 15.7 percent of the total population and represents the underprivileged sectors of society. It is noted that the scheduled castes make up 17.4 percent of the rural population and 10.6 percent of the urban population. The causes of variations in the concentration of the scheduled caste population are also analyzed. (ANNOTATION)
