Abstract

Total protein, fourteen individual plasma proteins and hyaluronate have been analyzed in patients with traumatic hydarthrosis. There is a general increase in the absolute amount of plasma proteins in these synovial fluids, while serum values are close to normal levels. The hyaluronate content is reduced, although the total production is far above the situation in normal synovial fluids. The present data support the existence of a mechanism of joint effusion which is common to several etiologies.
