Distribution of paralytic, lipophilic and amnesic toxins in phytoplankton and shellfish between Boca del Guafo and Golfo Elefantes (winter 2012, Aysen region, Chile)

800x600 The results of the harmful algal blooms (HABs) and marine toxins monitoring carried out in southern Chile (41°-55° S), are showing that the Aysen region (43°-47o S) presents the largest blooms and complexity of shellfish toxins profiles. During summer toxicity events in shellfish recurrently occur, by Paralytic Shellfish Poison (PSP), lipophilic toxins, Amnesic Shellfish Poison (ASP) and blooms of associated microalgae. However, the winter distribution of these microalgae and other indicators of its presence (cysts in sediments and / or toxins in shellfish), is poorly known During a winter cruise conducted in 2012 in this region, samples for phytoplankton toxicity in shellfish and plankton, and cysts in sediments, in 25 stations were collected. The results indicated a greater sensitivity of relative abundance than cell density as parameter of the microalgae distribution. Relative abundance estimates were mid-level to low, with maximum records in Alexandrium catenella and Protoceratium reticulatum of level 2 (scarce); A. ostenfeldii , Dinophysis acuminata and D. acuta with level 1 (rare); Pseudonitzschia cf. australis and P . cf. pseudodelicatissima with levels 3 (regular) and 4 (abundant), respectively. Only PSP on plankton and yessotoxins (lipophilic toxin) in molluscs were detected. Cysts of A. catenella and P. reticulatum were detected in sediments. The results in relation to the historical data available for the region , are discussed.
