Abstract

A study of the distribution of nitrogen compounds in crude oils and also in resin/asphaltene components, the distillate fractions, and residues is reported. The total nitrogen was determined by combustion in a Pokrovskii reactor and the basic nitrogen was determined by potentiometric titration with perchloric acid in acetic anhydride medium. Crudes from the principal oil and gas districts of Western Siberia were subjected to analysis. the total nitrogen content in these crudes varies from 0.09% to 0.33%. The basic nitrogen accounts for 8-36.4% of the total. In most of the crudes that were examined, the major part of the total and basic nitrogen is found in resins and asphaltenes.
