Abstract

Lightning peak currents are typically estimated with the use of remote sensing techniques. The lightning location and protection (LLP) system is used specifically for this purpose. This system records the remote peak magnetic fields radiated by cloud-to-ground lightning flashes. The peak stroke current distribution is determined by using these fields, a lightning locating algorithm, and a suitable propagation model. A more efficient lightning location algorithm and an improved propagation model are both investigated and applied to data collected in Ontario, Canada. These results are used to examine double-corridor outages on transmission lines.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
