Abstract

Renal transplantation is the most successful treatment option for chronic renal failure patients. But success of any transplantation depends on HLA antigen matching between the recipient and the donor. This study is the first report from Karnataka state of South India to find out distribution of HLA-class II antigens in live renal transplant recipients and donors visiting a tertiary care hospital. In this study, HLA-DR allele frequencies were studied in 314 renal transplant recipients and donors visited our hospital, during 2005–2013. HLA tissue typing was done by polymerase chain reaction using sequence specific primers. Then antigen frequencies were obtained and analyzed. A total of 32 HLA-DRB1 alleles were identified in the renal transplant recipients and donors. High frequency DRB1 alleles found in our patients and donors were DRB1 * 15(25.4%), DRB1 * 14(12.2%), DRB1 * 04(11.3%), DRB1 * 13(10.2%), DRB1 * 07(8.3%). DRB1 * 15 allele was the most frequent DRB1 antigen in both males and females. Also we have found that females outnumbered males among the donors. The results showed significant heterogeneity in HLA-DRB1 alleles. The most frequent HLA-DRB3, DRB4, DRB5 alleles we observed are DRB3 * 01/02, DRB4 * 01, DRB5 * 01/02 respectively.
