Abstract

The distribution of histone messenger RNA among free polyribosomes and two classes of membrane-associated polyribosomes was studied in an immunoglobulin-secreting mouse myeloma cell line. The two classes of membrane polyribosomes were distinguished on the basis of their sensitivity to dissociation from membranes upon exposure to high concentrations of salt or during repeated centrifugation through sucrose. Histone messenger RNA is specifically excluded from that class of polyribosomes most tightly associated with cellular membranes.
