Abstract

Glycosaminoglycans were isolated from tryptic digests of different gastric layers of the mucous membrane and muscular layer including serosa, and were assayed by determining the uronic acid content of material and by cellulose acetate strip-electrophoresis.The results have been discussed and summarized as follows.1. The glycosaminoglycan content was almost same between in the mucosa and in the muscular layer including serosa.2. Cellulose acetate strip-electrophoresis of materials from both gastric layers revealed the presence of three alcian blue positive fractions. The proportion of the fraction which corresponded in mobility with hyaluronic acid was almost same between in both gastric layers, and that of heparan sulfate was higher in the muscular layer including serosa than in the mucosa layer, whereas that of chondroitin sulfates was higher in the latter than in the former.
