Abstract
Trends in giant resonance experiments, the modern status of microscopic theory and demands that the experiments make on the microscopic theory are described briefly. Specific properties of the distribution of giant resonance strength in cold nuclei are discussed: 1) the old problem of structures in the photoabsorption cross section in 208 Pb; 2) the results of M1 resonance calculations with RPA and more complex configurations and the continuum in stable and unstable nuclei; and 3) some new effects of ground state correlations caused by complex 1p1h⊗phonon configurations. The problems of fine structure and experimental resolution are also discussed.
