The compiling of farm income series was first undertaken here by E. M. Ojala, whose results have lately been published by the University Press in Agriculture and Economic Progress—the Appendix to which contains estimates of agricultural net output and income in the United Kingdom for groups of years from 1867 to 1938. In his Preface Ojala makes acknowledgments, which we warmly reciprocate, and refers especially to A. W. Ashby's part in the work. Ojala was good enough to leave his farm-income material with the Institute, and A. J. Boreham, a member of a team studying the relationships between agriculture and industry, combined this with other data to produce annual estimates for the same period. K. E. Hunt and D. K. Britton who had independently prepared series of the gross output of certain farm products made these available, and assisted in the further construction of the output and income figures. For purposes of the breakdown of income, studies of rent by A. W. Ashby, D. K. Britton and H. A. Rhee were used. A. J. Boreham was chiefly responsible for the estimates of tenant's capital and the aggregate interest on it. The wage figures were produced by the present speaker, who acknowledges especially the many months of work by W. D. McMullen in compiling wage-rate series and by F. D. W. Taylor in making the computations involved in editing and completing the present series.
