Abstract
Abstract Cultures of the blue‐green alga, Gomphosphaeria aponina, have been subjected to continuous cell centrifugation, and the distribution of cytolytic activity has been evaluated. Extracts of the cultures are cytolytic toward a red tide organism, Gymnodinium breve. Improved cytolytic assay procedures are described. Most of the cytolytic activity (60%) is associated with the chloroform extracts of the cell‐free medium, and the agreement successive experiments is good (e.g., 64 vs. 59–61% of total activity in the cell‐free extracts).
