Abstract

Bou Ismail Bay, is located 30 km West of Algiers, in the north mediterranean platform of Algeria. The distribution of sediments is intimately related to coastal and submarine physiography and currents. A rich benthic foraminiferal fauna was found and 147 species were distinguished on the 27 samples studied by means of qualitative analysis, countings and correspondance analysis. According to the trend of their distribution Foraminifera may be delineated into four assemblages : — An inner shelf assemblage in biogenic sands and sea grass area with mainly Ammonia beccarii and many Quinqueloculina species. — In the muddy sediments of the middle shelf Bolivina and Bulimina species dominate. — The belt of biogenic detrital sands in the outer shelf is characterized by a diversity of species. — Muddy substrate of the upper slope are dominated by Uvigerina, Cassidulina and Bulimina. The distribution of foraminiferal fauna emphasizes the importance of the nature of the substrate for the distribution of the benthic Foraminifera.
