Abstract

The knowledge of the mosquito distribution in the Western Palaearctic region has significantly improved in recent decades. We here synthesise published records in an updateddistribution chart. The western Palaearctic region is divided into 5 areas and 75 geographical units, the latter mainly considered on a country basis or on a geographical basis (e.g. islands). The total number of species accounts for 145. The status of each species for a defined geographic unit is given according to five categories: 'Present native', 'Present introduced', 'Uncertain for presence or absence', 'Absent extinct' and 'Absent never observed'. Relevant references are given per country in the annex.
