Abstract

Ring-fed distribution network is a popular electric supply configuration in metropolitan area. The inverse definite minimum time lag (IDMTL) overcurrent (OC) and earth fault (EF) protections provide the backup protections to ring-fed distribution network to clear unclear system fault such as busbar fault, main protection failure and stuck breaker. If the backup protection operates in incorrect sequence, power supply to more busbars will be lost. This paper shows that the Time Coordination Method (TCM) con successfully search for the optimum protection relay settings. It also shows better coordinated relays can improve the supply reliability by minimising the number of mis-coordinated relay operations.
