Abstract

Most cores of Late Quaternary sediments from the Eastern Mediterranean Sea contain many ash layers. Glass shards from discrete layers have been analysed chemically for major elements. The layers from different cores have been correlated and unambiguously related to known volcanic events on the basis of the chemical data. Most of the layers are derived from explosive eruptions of the Santorini volcanic complex; other layers have their source in other volcanoes of the Hellenic Arc (Yali, Nisyros, Kos); one layer originated from the Campanian area, Italy.
