Abstract
In Odawa Bay, central Japan, three species of seagrass occur, Zostera marina L., Z. japonica Aschers. et Graebner and Halophila ovalis Hook. f., of which the eelgrass, Z. marina, forms dense and wide beds in shallow littoral areas. The ecological distribution of these seagrasses was studied by diving observations from which it was determined that depth distribution was closely related to transparency of water and/or degree of insolation. The area of Odawa Bay covered with the eelgrass and the total eelgrass biomass in May 1977 were estimated to be ca. 68.2 ha, and ca. 101.2 tons dry weight.
