Abstract

Automatic generation control (AGC) is an crucial function to guarantee the stable and safe operation of the multi-area interconnected power system. On the one hand, the intermittent and random fluctuation of the grid connected new energy generating units brings great challenges to AGC. On the other hand, the fast and accurate output of battery energy storage system (BESS) provides a new way to control the frequency of the electric power system. A distributed AGC model including the thermal power plant, the battery and the wind turbine is proposed. A distributed model predictive control (DMPC) strategy is designed to achieve the control of the system. The strategy is used to coordinate the outputs of thermal power plant and battery to keep the frequency of the system stable. The results of the simulation in a two-area interconnected electric power system prove the proposed method is useful.
