Abstract

The principle of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors for monitoring cracks in concrete structures is analyzed, and the distributed crack monitoring technique based FBG sensing is studied. To verify the feasibility of FBG crack sensing, an experiment was conducted using a concrete beam. The test results show that the FBG sensors can accurately monitor crack initiation and propagation as well as the quantitative rule of crack propagation, which can reflect the failure mode of concrete. Multiple FBG sensors in one single fiber possess distributed sensing capability, and can monitor crack initiation and propagation without knowledge of crack locations a priori.
