Abstract

The distorted-wave Born calculation for transfer of one quantum of asymmetric stretch from CO2 to 14N2 and 15N2 is presented. A spherically symmetric Lennard-Jones 6–12 potential with parameters derived from transport properties is used as distorting potential. The energy transfer is assumed caused by dipole–quadrupole coupling, i.e., interaction involving the transition dipole of CO2 and the transition quadrupole of N2. The results obtained are in excellent agreement with those obtained earlier using a straight path as the trajectory during the intermolecular collision and an empirical recipe for summing over impact parameters.
