Abstract

The paper discusses the distinctive features of Roman Jakobson (Jakobson, Hale 1952) and their application in the distinctive features matrices (DFM) in Serbian (and Serbo–Croatian) phonological studies. Distinctive features are unevenly represented – from the number of features, their order, to the way the features are ascribed to phonemes. At the end of the paper, a new phoneme matrix of the Serbian language is proposed, and the features themselves are redefined in accordance with the latest knowledge in the field of phonetics and phonology.
