Abstract
ABSTRACT Independent determinations are made of the distances to the four high-velocity and one low-velocity members of Stephan's Quintet of galaxies, a compact group with discrepant redshifts. Optical velocity dispersions were determined for the four high-velocity galaxies based on observations made with the Photon Counting Reticon System on the Mount Hopkins 60-inch telescope, and used to estimate the luminosity, and thus the distances, of the galaxies. The distance of NGC 7320, the low-velocity member, was derived from inclination-corrected 21-cm line widths according to the Tully-Fisher method (1977). The data obtained support the view that all the objects are at distances consistent with their redshifts, with NGC 7320 representing a foreground object superposed against a distant group of objects, and are at variance with the conjecture of Arp (1973) of the physical relation of all the galaxies.
