Abstract

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic condition that appears to be increasing in prevalence worldwide. In the 2012 U.S Medicaid population, we recently reported that EoE is less prevalent in rural areas of the United States, as well as among those living in higher poverty neighborhoods.1 Although it is possible that these findings could be related to unique urban exposures such as pollution, it may also be that the apparent protective effect of rural residence is instead related to underdiagnosis of EoE.
