Abstract

A novel control method involving an automatic tuning of digital PID controller parameters has been developed for better regulation of DOC by manipulating agitation speed (RPM) and oxygen partial pressure in a fed—batch fermentation ofE. coli. Heuristic reasoning allows the PID to reach improved tuning decisions based upon the supervision of certain control performance indices in the same cognitive manner as in expert control, which obviates the need for assumptions about the process or disturbance patterns.
