Abstract

Typical dissolved mercury (Hg) concentrations in unpolluted waters are alleged to be < 50 ng 1 −1 and sometimes< 10 ng 1 −1. Mean concentrations found in the catchment area of Lake Windermere were found to range between 12 and 29 ng 1 −1 over a three month period. However in particular instances concentrations of 75 and 96 ng 1 −1 were found, thought to be due to runoff from mineral deposits and sewage outfalls respectively.
