Abstract

Measurements have been made of the corrosion rate and corrosion potential of manganese in 1 M chloride (HCl + KCl) and 0·5 M sulphate (H 2SO 4 + K 2SO 4) solutions of pH in the region 0–3. The corrosion rate is found to be controlled by the pH- and stirring-dependent limiting rate of hydrogen ion reduction. The results further reveal a pH- and stirring-independent Tafel line with slope 2·303 RT 2F for the manganese dissolution reaction. Comparisons are made with similar data for other metals.
