Abstract

To review the literature on the association between a lack of coherent sense of self (i.e., dissociation) and alcohol use disorder (AUD). Child maltreatment leads to abnormal development of brain regions associated with possible mediators and moderators of the relationship between early life stress and AUD. People with a propensity to dissociate or to seek dissociative experiences (e.g., chemical dissociation) could have a higher risk of AUD and more generally of actions undertaken with limited conscious awareness (i.e., habits and routines). The study of the relationship between early caregiving interactions, dissociation states, suboptimal mind-body interactions, and AUD is important for devising more efficient prevention and treatments.
