Abstract

Measurements on rounded Pt crystals show that in the presence of a high Si contamination the CO dissociation activity of {210} areas drops drastically to zero after about 27% of their adsorption sites (which are identical with their kink sites) are blocked by Si. The drastic decrease is attributed to Pt-silicide formation on {210}. To obtain complete poisoning of {1195} areas, considerably higher contamination levels are required than in the case of {210}.
