Abstract

Summary Chaetomium cupreum, Drechslera oryzae and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vasinfectum utilized phenol, resorcinol, phloroglucinol, pyrogallol, benzoic acid, m -hydroxybenzoic acid, p -hydroxybenzoic acid, phloroglucinolcarboxylic acid, phenylacetic acid, m -hydroxyphenylacetic acid as sole carbon source. The central metabolites catechol, protocatechuic acid, hydroxyquinol, gentisic acid and homogentisic acid were isolated by replacement culture. The fungi elaborated catechol 1,2-dioxygenase, protocatechuate 3,4-dioxygenase, hydroxyquinol 1,2-dioxygenase, gentisate oxygenase and homogentisate oxygenase during growth on aromatic substances. Pathways for the degradation of aromatic substances were proposed.
