Abstract

This paper discusses the impact created by Skype Technologies when it launched its Internet telephone services. Skype's popularity steadily grew, especially when it introduced a service called SkypeOut, which allows users to dial ordinary telephone lines from a PC. Soon after, the company also launched a service called SkypeIn, which enables other telecom users to call Skype customers by allocating telephone numbers to Skype's users on a subscription basis. Skype recently announced that it would be acquired by the online auction house ebay. With this move, Skype hopes to be better prepared when Microsoft rolls out its own VoIP service. Another concern that the company hopes to address is the threat from some regulatory authorities of restricting access to Skype.
