Disputed Questions in Study of The Primary Chronicle from the 1950s to the 1970s

Abstract

Study of the history of Russian chronicle writing, particularly The Primary Chronicle (or The Tale of Bygone Years) [Nachal'naia letopis' (Povest' vremennykh let)] has a long tradition and has attained highly productive results. Chronicle research is one of the branches of historical source research in whose development particularly significant successes have been achieved. Outstanding masters of the topic, highly erudite and gifted in scientific analysis and synthesis and creative intuition, have toiled in this field. Today there naturally rests on those who are studying the chronicles the duty to preserve and raise further the high level of professionalism already achieved.
