Abstract

The dispute settlement of the World Trade Organization (WTO) is a central element in providing security and predictability to the multilateral trading system. The dispute settlement of the WTO is effective, reliable, and has been widely used by most Members. The dispute settlement of the WTO and the Dispute Settlement Understanding (DSU) have been considered as the greatest achievement of the international trade community since the Bretton Woods. The WTO dispute settlement is mostly used by the United States and the European Union. The developing countries also use the system moderately. The dispute settlement procedure is evaluated in each round, and proposals for change are discussed at rounds to make the system better. Discussions regarding dispute settlement are done at the current DOHA Round, and mentioned in the Doha Development Agenda (DDA). The chapter also covers the issues that have been raised in current negotiations. Keywords: Dispute Settlement Understanding (DSU); Doha Development Agenda (DDA); international trade law; World Trade Organization (WTO)
