Abstract

Methyl and n-pentyl radicals were produced by photolysis of 2-heptanone. The primary process in the photolysis of this compound may be given by CH/sub 3/ CO(CH/sub 2/)/sub 4/CH/sub 3/ + hv -CH/sub 3/COCH/sub 3/ + C/sub 4/H/sub 8/. Several reactions of methyl and npentyl radicals have been investigated. Data at 63 and at 91 deg indicate k/sub 3//(k/sub 2//sup 1/2/ k/sub 5//sup 1/2/) = 1.6 plus or minus 0. 1. Approximate values of 0.1 and 0.2 are suggested for k/sub 4// k/sub 3/ and k/sub 6//k/sub 5/, respectively. These figures are compared with similar ratios of rate constants for other alkyl radicals.
