Abstract

AbstractThis chapter discusses the main political consequences of an electoral system. These are the effects of the electoral system on the proportionality and disproportionality of the electoral outcomes and their effects on the party system, especially the degree of multipartism and the tendency to generate majority victories. The chapter explains the different measures of disproportionality and suggests that the link between the party system as the independent variable and disproportionality as the dependent variable has an important implication for two of the four additional dimensions of electoral systems, which are presidentialism and ballot structure.
