Abstract

It is shown that suitable liquids, when dispersed through samples with which they are immiscible, can be used as otherwise uncontained references for the measurement of chemical shifts. These shifts are independent of the volume magnetic susceptibility of the components of the heterogeneous sample. The 1H chemical shifts for various compounds in model systems have been measured using both the traditional external reference and the new dispersed methods and the differences between these are explained.
