Abstract

This paper presents the development of a supervision system for a large wind farm based on squirrel cage induction generator. The aim is to manage and control the active and reactive power, considering the Fault Ride-Through (FRT) capability. Each squirrel cage induction generator (SCIG) is controlled to produce the maximum power, provide an active and a reactive power predetermined by the transmission system operator (TSO) or to satisfy the grid code requirements (GCRs). The reactive power at PCC is distributed over the all wind turbines using the proportional distribution algorithm and controlled using the proposed PI reactive power control (PIRPC) method. The effectiveness of the proposed control strategies and the supervisory approach is proven via of simulation results. It shows that they are efficient, guarantee good performance, satisfy the GCRs and ensure that the wind farm behaves as a conventional power plant.
