Abstract

Soil colloids probably adsorb As and therefore As transport from soil system to shallow groundwater systems. However, species and fractions of adsorbed As by soil colloids have barely been recognized. This study is aiming to investigate the disparity of the adsorbed As species and fractions between soil and soil colloids. The results showed that As adsorption on soil colloids was higher compared to that on soil. Relatively more As was associated with amorphous (hydr)oxides in soil colloids. Arsenic(V) was reduced to As(III) on the solid phase of soil colloids and released to the liquid phase. This suggested that soil colloids would have the ability to facilitate As transport from soil to shallow groundwater.
