Spitzer, L., Jr. ; McGlynn, T. A. Abstract Suprathermal rotation of an interstellar dust grain that is dynamically symmetric about the z axis is analyzed in the case where the torque, measured in body axes, is strictly constant. The cumulative deflection angle of the grain's angular momentum during crossover (torque reversal) is computed by using both a simple theoretical model and detailed dynamical computer calculations. The results suggest that disorientation is relatively complete in two to three crossovers. It is concluded that paramagnetic relaxation theory can easily explain grain orientation only if 'long-lived spinup' and infrequent crossovers are assumed.
