Abstract
September 2, 1971, was my first day of work as a curator of anthropology at Museum of Natural History in Chicago. I was told I should always say Field Museum, not The Museum. I was also told my place of employ is the fourth-largest natural history museum in the world-ranking just behind the British Museum (Natural History) in London, the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, and the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Chicago may be a far cry from London, Washington, or New York, but it is my experience that being in Chicago has never meant that what happens here is not happening elsewhere.
