Dislocation shearing through a repulsive particle

Abstract

Neither τ ρ nor r ρ alone can describe the gross strength of the particle in the field dealing with the dislocation-particle interaction. It seems useful to introduce a new parameter, the characteristic strength parameter of the particle, S ϱ = 2 τ ρ r ρ . Then, the criterion for a dislocation shearing into a particle is S ϱ < Gb, the criterion for a dislocation shearing through a particle is S ϱ < Gb 2/b′, and the maximum resisting force on the dislocation segment exerted by the particle is F max = b′ S ϱ .
