Abstract

In situ straining of Ni 3Ga foils in a TEM has shown that dislocations pile up at the grain boundaries and that slip is transferred across the boundaries ahead of the pile-ups, independent of whether the alloy contains boron. Cracks always propagate along the slip bands, never along the grain boundaries. This feature may be a reflection of the low tensile stress triaxialily in the thin foils.
