Abstract
Discussions about Islam and democracy are indeed a discourse that will never end to be explored. The fundamental difference between the two exponents is thought in the realm of fundamental intellectual debate. In this article, I will discuss the thoughts of Nurcholish Madjid in seeking the relationship between Islam and democracy. The method used by Nurcholish Madji is none other than the theological theology of democracy using the principles that exist in Islam. he uses an apologetic method that is imposing a liberal democratic system so that it is inherent in Islam. Nurcholish Madjid's thoughts cannot be separated from how democracy must accommodate the wishes of the people. According to him, a just leader, although not a Muslim, is better than a Muslim leader, but the leader is unjust and brings suffering to his people.
