Abstract

The early reactions of Christianity towards the Islam demonstrate not only hostility and apologetic methods, but also an attempt to redefine Christian identity. For John of Damascus Islam was just a Christian heresy which has to be combated in an adequate manner. Theodor Abu Qurrah introduced a new method of rational argumentation to support his own Christian identity. Mar Timotheos offers an example for the inculturation of Christianity in an Arabian context.
