Abstract

Gastrointestinal fibre endoscopes and ancillary equipment were found to be contaminated with bacteria. A widely used method of disinfection with alcohol was ineffective. A disinfection method using glutaraldehyde was simple, quick (<15 minutes), cheap, and reliable within its limitations. It could be used during the endoscopy session. A method using ethylene oxide was much slower and required expensive apparatus but was also effective.
