Abstract
I was delighted that you published my article Taking the Blame’ (Features December 11). However, in reply to Stephen Moore’s review of the ethical principles behind the case, our action was in fact ‘weak’ paternalism since the patient was not competent and we took action to ensure that he came into hospital without causing injury to himself or others. ‘Strong’ paternalism would have occurred had we then insisted that he have investigations into his epilepsy without his consent when he had recovered mental competence.
