Abstract

Diseases of the Nose, Throat and Earis a well-organized and readable account designed especially for medical students and residents during their ENT training. It is oriented exclusively for the British medical community and, as such, is not maximally useful on American medical students. The use of the head mirror and speculum is considerably different from that taught in the United States. While brief and concise, the short textbook covers a large amount of material on the ear, nose, and throat. The illustrations, on the whole, are crisp and clean, and the text is well written. I was particularly happy to see a section on hearing aids, which is so often omitted from most basic textbooks on otolaryngology. Unfortunately, here again, the emphasis was on the instruments available through the British National Health Service. This is the 11th edition of a work initially published in 1937, which, I think, attests
