Abstract

An able clinician and an outstanding biochemist have combined their efforts to come forth with an appropriate synthesis of the biochemistry and the clinical aspects of the diseases of porphyrin metabolism. Both are experts on porphyrin metabolism. The result is a highly informative and authoritative summary. The monograph is divided into eight chapters: I. History, classification, geographical distribution, and incidence of the porphyrias; II. Normal biosynthesis of porphyrins and haem; III. Congenital porphyria; IV. Acute intermittent porphyria; V. Cutaneous hepatic porphyria; VI. Diseases of porphyrin metabolism other than the porphyrias; VII. Porphyria in animals; VIII. Experimental porphyria in animals. The book is well printed and well illustrated, and a large bibliography is included. The only omission of serious and regrettable consequence is that a section on methodology has not been included.
