Abstract

Of the many species of poplar, the aspen, Populus tremula, is native here, as perhaps are also the grey poplar, P. canescens, and the black poplar, P. nigra. Many introduced poplars are also grown. These include the white poplar, P. alba, and the Lombardy poplar, P. nigra var. italica. The forms grown for timber (mostly for the production of matches), however, are mainly clones of the balsam poplar, P. trichocarpa, and of the hybrid black Italian poplar, P. x euramericana.
