Abstract

Objective. To analyze the hospitalization situation and acquire the development law of age-related diseases in elderly inpatients, and to provide clinical evidence to its prevention and management. Methods. The data of elderly inpatients admitted to our hospital from 2006 to 2011were collected, the results were sorted, and statistical analysis was performed according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10). Results. There were 33656 cases of elderly inpatients over 60 years, amounting to 37.35% of all inpatients. The first five diseases enlisted were circulatory system diseases, respiratory system diseases, digestive system diseases, nervous system diseases and malignant tumors, amounting to 75.37% of all the elderly inpatients. The first five causes of death were malignant tumors, circulatory system diseases, respiratory system diseases, digestive system diseases and nervous system diseases, amounting to 88.60% of all inpatient deaths. Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, along with malignant tumors, were the main threat to the health of elders; they were the two main causes of death in the first ten death causes. Conclusion. The elderly inpatients constituted a major part of all the inpatients. The main diseases causing a threat to the health of elders and thereby leading to their death were circulatory system diseases, respiratory system diseases, digestive system diseases, nervous system diseases, and malignant tumors.
