Abstract

The outbreak of epidemic small pox in the Caribbean at the beginning of the 20 th century aggravated the problems inherited from the 19 th century posing further challenges for these territories. This study discusses the bitter controversy that it stimulated between Barbados and Trinidad and examines the course of and response to, the disease in both colonies. It is argued that the underlying economic and social implications of the epidemic underscore the relationship between trade and health and demonstrate how regional cooperation was possible even in the midst of rivalry.
