Abstract

Bureau et al have attempted to assess the effects of oral fistulas on speech using several parameters: perceptual speech evaluations, nasal air emission as judged by the old “mirror” test, videofluoroscopy of the velopharyngeal (VP) mechanism, and nasometry for the measurement of “nasalance.” There are unanswered questions with regard to their independent variable (size and location of the fistulae), as well as with some of their dependent variables.
